Digi Yatra hopes to serve 80% of flight travelers by 2028
Digi Yatra stated on Friday that it has surpassed 15 million application downloads, highlighting the platform’s potential to transform millions of customers’ airport experiences through contactless, biometric-enabled travel.
According to a statement from the Digi Yatra Foundation, the self-sovereign identity (SSI) based ecosystem Digi Yatra, which uses facial authentication technology, is rapidly gaining traction and is redefining air travel by guaranteeing privacy-first, effective, and hassle-free travel through Indian airports.
With the smooth integration of cutting-edge facial recognition technology at 24 airports across the country, Digi Yatra has enabled over 60 million frictionless journeys since its launch in December 2022.
With an average of 30,000 app downloads per day and an anticipated 16.5 million downloads by August 2025, the platform is firmly establishing itself as a reliable travel companion for millions of people while also setting new benchmarks in digital travel innovation.
In addition to looking at integrating with airlines and online travel firms to expedite boarding pass sharing, Digi Yatra hopes to serve almost 80% of domestic flight travelers in India by 2028, up from the current 30% to 35%.
“Achieving the milestone of 15 million users is a powerful confirmation of the increasing confidence in Digi Yatra’s mission to provide a smooth, safe, and forward-thinking travel experience. Initiatives like the “d-KYC” campaign and our expansion to Tier-II airports in 2024 allowed us to reach a larger audience, according to Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO, Digi Yatra Foundation.
Our priorities going forward continue to be growing our presence, enhancing user experience, and establishing new international standards for passenger identity management, he said.
In the upcoming months, Digi Yatra plans to increase its reach by deploying its biometric-based system at four more airports: Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru, and Srinagar.
Additionally, all 22 recognized Indian languages will soon be supported by the site, allowing travelers to choose their preferred language to navigate airport procedures.
Subject to agreement with regulatory agencies, the next “Digi Yatra 2.0,” which is presently undergoing testing, will expand support for foreign travel and improve functionality even more.
The platform is bringing itself into compliance with international standards to enable more seamless international travel through its strategic partnership with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) under the One-ID X Digi Yatra framework.
