The Parliament was notified on Tuesday that Indian Railways is offering free Wi-Fi at 6,115 train stations nationwide. The government’s Digital India Programme, which aims to close the digital divide between urban and rural areas, includes free Wi-Fi at train stations.
Telecom service providers offer 4G and 5G coverage at nearly every Indian Railways train station. Additionally, travelers are using these networks for data connectivity, which improves the traveler experience. In addition to the aforementioned, 6,115 train stations now offer free Wi-Fi,” Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha in a written response to a query.
Passengers can use the free Wi-Fi at these stations to conduct office work, stream HD films, and download leisure content. Passengers must connect to ‘RailWire’ Wi-Fi and activate the Wi-Fi mode on their smartphone in order to use the service. Before they can begin using Wi-Fi, they must input their cell number for an SMS OTP.
This service covers several Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in addition to all of the major stations in Tier 1 cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai Central, Chennai Central, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad.
Along with tier 3 cities like Rohtak and Cuttack, tier 2 cities like Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Meerut, Bhopal, etc. are served.
Through its ‘RailWire’ brand, RailTel, a public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways, offers free Wi-Fi at Indian train stations.
In order to grow the project, RailTel has previously worked with companies like Google and Tata Trusts; however, the PSU is currently managing RailWire’s access and administration independently.
In April, the Institute of Road Transport awarded RailTel a significant order valued at Rs 90.08 crore. Over the last five years, investors have received returns on their shares of over 140%.
