IndiGo's domestic market share decreased while India's overall passenger growth increased

Low-cost carrier IndiGo, which encountered a significant crisis earlier this month, saw its domestic market share fall to 63.6 percent in November, as reported by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The largest airline in the country held a 65.6 percent market share in October.

The market share of the Air India Group (which includes Air India and Air India Express) increased to 26.7 percent in November, up from 25.7 percent the previous month.

Akasa Air also experienced a decline in its domestic market share, dropping to 4.7 percent in November from 5.2 percent in October.

During the period from January to November 2025, domestic airlines carried 1,526.35 lakh passengers compared to 1,464.02 lakh passengers during the same timeframe last year, resulting in an annual growth of 4.26 percent and a monthly growth of 6.92 percent,” according to DGCA data.

The overall cancellation rate for scheduled domestic airlines in November 2025 stood at 1.33 percent.

In the meantime, the government has granted preliminary approval for three new airlines to begin operations following the recent disruption in IndiGo services, which left passengers stranded for several days nationwide and highlighted the potential misuse of market dominance by the largest domestic carrier.

The civil aviation ministry issued a “no-objection certificate” to regional airlines – Shankh Air, Al Hind Air, and FlyExpress.

Earlier this month, IndiGo had to cancel more than 4,000 flights across major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, primarily due to a shortage of crew members.

The low-cost airline faced a severe crew deficit resulting from the rollout of the second phase of flight duty time restrictions (FDTL), which left planes immobilized at airports throughout the country, disrupting travel plans for passengers.

The government has launched an investigation into IndiGo’s extensive flight cancellations that left thousands of travelers stranded at airports across the nation.
