IATA Director General William Walsh is named CEO of IndiGo

Following Pieter Elbers’ resignation as the CEO of the low-cost carrier earlier this month, William Walsh was appointed Chief Executive Officer of InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo, on Tuesday, pending regulatory approval.

The airline stated in a statement that Walsh’s term at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will expire on July 31, 2026, and that he is anticipated to join the organization no later than August 3, 2026.

Walsh, widely known as Willie, is the current Director General of IATA and served as CEO of British Airways and IAG (International Airlines Group), a holding company that owns Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level, and Vueling).

His experience in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics makes him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo for continued growth in an ever-evolving and competitive international aviation environment,” stated Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman of IndiGo.

Following the low-cost carrier’s worst-ever flight issue in December of last year, Elbers stepped down as the CEO of IndiGo, the nation’s largest airline, which is owned by InterGlobe Aviation Limited, earlier this month.

During his tenure as IndiGo CEO, which began just over three years prior, Elbers presided over a period of significant expansion for the airline.

I am delighted to welcome Willie to IndiGo as we enter a new phase of transformation and growth,” said Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo.

“His values-driven leadership, deep industry experience, and operational skills in developing successful customer-focused airlines make him uniquely qualified to lead IndiGo at this critical turning point of growth,” Bhatia said of his iconic and accomplished aviation leader.

In his new position as IndiGo’s CEO, Walsh will be in charge of the airline’s overall administration and strategic direction, with an emphasis on revolutionary programs that will improve the airline’s operational performance, advance its network and commercial plan, and raise the bar for the customer experience.

IndiGo is in a fantastic position to be at the forefront of this change because the aviation industry is changing quickly. Walsh said, “I look forward to working with colleagues throughout the organization to create a culture of excellence, innovation, cooperation, and lasting value for all stakeholders.
